Jake Lunde is a designer at Blink UX, baker of sourdough & Swedish cinnamon rolls, and proponent of weed as a way to wind down. He's sharing his approach to taking things less personally, the way he's channeling Elle Woods, and pictures of his grandparents' clowns. Wild.

1. What is your life motto right now?

“I’m not responsible for other people’s feelings.”

This is my therapy-by-proxy through my wife which has really helped me to free me in situations where I catch myself trying to manage other people before they communicate their feelings. I’m not a mind reader, and I shouldn't be expected to be.

2. What's your most-played song within the past week? Why?

Mono No Aware by Great Grandpa

My buddy Dylan is in this indie band this is my fave song on their new album. It's a Japanese term about empathy toward things, and the awareness (and sadness) around fleeting beauty of life, but wonder at the fact that we were here to experience it. That's life. Sorta sad, but it's about perspective and living in the moment.

3. Your Top Three Books of All Time:

Truthfully, I don't read as much as I think I should but,

4. Your Approach to Health in One Sentence:

“Everything in moderation.” Also YOLO.

5. Your Approach to Happiness in One Sentence:

God that's tough. “Don't be so hard on yourself.” feels close though.

6. Your Approach to Dating in One Sentence:

I heard a nice quote the other day, and I can't recall the source but it's along the lines of, “you’ll marry 5 people in your lifetime, and they could all be the same person”. I've been lucky enough to be married for 5 years this July, and I know we’re married to different people than we were when we met. I'm also lucky enough to have a partner that is willing to be equally committed, to put the other first, and to communicate our feelings constantly so we know how to be there for one another, and so bad shit can't creep in. Love you, Tay.

7. Funny / most-cringe date:

There was this time when Tay and I had first started dating, it was the night before we were supposed to start our long-distance relationship after a summer of love. We were sophomores in college, making out in her room, it's getting intense, and all of a sudden it starts to feel a bit more… wet than usual. I open my eyes and shout, “oh my god, you're bleeding!” Blood was all over her face. Her expression quickly changed from confusion to fear to a playful grin- “No YOU’RE bleeding!” My nose was gushing blood all over my girlfriends face. Oh my god. She's gonna break up with me. I can't believe this is how it ends.

She couldn't stop laughing. Lucky for me, the absurdity of the whole thing just was hilarious to her. So we both laughed for a bit, cleaned ourselves up and the next day we began long-distance dating for 3 years before graduating and getting married. Wild.

8. Most used word:

Honestly, probably “Wild”.

9. Last screenshot:

This is a screenshot of my grandparents' Facebook marketplace ad for their creepy clowns that traumatized me as a child. They're finally selling them all, so I have to relive it now. Also my grandma’s all-caps sentence in there cracked me up.

10. What are 1-3 things you do when you feel blue to make yourself feel better? / or feel like you’re having an off day?

  • I smoke some weed

  • I go for a walk

  • I bake or cook

  • I play video games

I have to work really hard to give myself the space to relax. I used to be able to play video games all day, but now I can only be “unproductive” for short bits. Weed helps me to slow down, be more present, and not feel guilty for taking time for self-care.

11. Insert most used emoji:

12. Most inspiring quote:

definitely the quote I put in my bio- “The older you get, the better you get, unless you're a banana” - Rose Nylund from The Golden Girls.

13. What was the last thing that made you laugh?

Goofy crashing on his surfboard in an old Disney short called “Hawaiian Holiday.”

14. Who’s someone who you can rely on to always make you smile? Why/what do they do?

My toy poodle Louie, she's with me almost all the time. It brings me so much joy watching people interact with her. She is the cutest, sweetest little dog with the biggest personality.

15. Best advice you’ve ever gotten:

Probably, “It's just work”. I see people get so strung out at work about this project and that. Your life doesn't depend on it (most of the time). If it doesn't, then do your best and draw your line. You are just as much (if not more) of an asset to your job than it is to you. I'm not saying work is meaningless or trivial, I'm saying you should do your work, and enjoy your life.

16. Someone/something that changed your life (for the better):

Oh jeez, Besides all the stuff I put above, If I had to pick a recent, big deal person/thing, it'd be last year when we became homeowners. Besides the saving money, finding and buying the right place, there are SO many adult things I know about, like drywall, and insurance policies and how to install a dishwasher. I mean, to each their own, but I think having to take care of a house makes me better at all sorts of things.

17. Most overrated advice / trend right now (in your opinion):

“No bad days” is a silly one to me. Don't pretend that everything is great all the time, it makes you appear less authentic. Acknowledge your bad days, but don't give them power over you. Tomorrow is a new day.

18. Something you feel like saying:

I feel like a fraud in a lot of areas of my life and I'm trying to channel that Elle Woods realness because I actually deserve to be where I am, doing what I'm doing.

19. Fave website / youtube video / link online at the moment:

that is tough. I'm gonna say @ZoeBakes on insta. She's this awesome baker from Minnesota I've been following for a while now. her stories/highlights are the best and make it so easy to know if what you're baking looks like it's right at each stage.

20. Fill in the blank: I’m happiest when I: _______________________

am helping others or making them laugh.

21. Tag a gem who inspires you:

Obvs my wife Taylor, the nurse/artist

And thennnn, Megan Ruhlach or Laura Blanchard.
